The scene was set for an epic battle amongst the giants of endurance racing at the legendary Nurburgring track.
Amongst a sea highly competitive Audis and Toyotas, Porsche was able to take out round 4 of the FIA WEC Championship with Australian Mark Webber, Timo Bernhard and Brendon Hartley at the helm.
What's even more special about the win was that Porsche scored a 1-2 victory at the race with Webber achieving his first ever WEC win for the Stuttgart team at their home race.
The gruelling six-hour race was fought out hard in 30-degree heat amongst 62,000 fans as the Porsche 919 Hybrid displayed its reliability, performance and ground-breaking hybrid technology to take home the bacon.
The latest efforts of the young team is heralded as a hatrick after the 919 Hybrid won last year's finale in Brazil before going onto conquer Le Mans 2015 with a 1-2 result.
What does victory look like in the championship standings? An extended lead in the manufacturer's rankings lying 33 points ahead of Audi and 95 points ahead of Toyota.
Chairman of Porsche AG Matthias Müller expressed his joy saying, “after the successful Le Mans weekend we came here with huge expectations.
The time since June 14 was obviously very well used and today we have shown what Porsche is able to do. Not only in LMP1, but also in the GTE Pro class. Congratulations to everyone involved.”
The perennially humble Webber also added to the elation saying that, “achieving the second one-two after Le Mans is great for our team. This is my first Porsche victory and, of course, it is a big day for Brendon, Timo and myself, and it is always a team effort.”
“The two of them were awesome, we had no technical issues and took an important step by improving our performance on shorter tracks. Traffic was sometimes brutal today, but we made it.”
