Life on Mars is a long way off, but life in David Bowie's Mustique home is closer than you think. In the wake of the legendary musician's death, his US$20 million Caribbean villa is available to rent for the first time.
Situated on 6.2 acres of land, the property retains all the glamour and extravagance Bowie envisioned when he chose its Indonesia-inspired design back in the Eighties. The rock icon called his hillside hideaway a “tranquil place,” but found it so peaceful and relaxing that he had difficulty writing music there.
The estate's five bedrooms are each individually named and have a private veranda that opens out to the pool. The home also boasts multiple reception rooms, a dining pavilion, a games room, a study, and an infinity pool with a panoramic view of the coast. If you think you'll have better luck than Bowie writing music while in residence, there's even a recording studio and a stage for performances.
Explaining the stunning space, designed by a Swedish architect as a series of pavilions dotted throughout a tropical garden, the glam rock god once said: 'I wanted something as unlike the Caribbean as possible. It's a whim personified. I love a good cliché, and this house, for me, is just the most delightful cliché. What you have to realise is that Mustique is a fantasy island.”
If it's a fantasy you'd like to experience yourself, be prepared to empty your piggy bank. A one-week stay at the Caribbean retreat will cost you between $40,000 and $70,000 USD.
