'Netflix and chill', according to its extremely legitimate Wikipedia page is “an English language slang term using an invitation to watch Netflix together as a euphemism for sex, either between partners or casually as a booty call.”
Social media has made the phrase more than just a giggle-worthy internet meme, but a bonafide viral sex catchphrase employed across the globe. There's even a “Netflix & Chill Room” in New York City for rent on Airbnb if you want a totally immersive experience.
With all the Netflix and chilling happening around the world, it's no surprise that eventually Netflix cottoned on and decided it was time to look into the phenomenon. With the help of market research company Ipsos, Netflix surveyed 1,008 American users of the service between 18 and 29, and here's what they found.
- TV and movie preferences are important long before a couple make it official. In fact, 58% of those polled had included favourite shows or movies in their online dating profiles in an effort to find a compatible partner.
- 27% reported that they considered liking the same shows as a significant part of compatibility, with men more likely than women to report that 'show compatibility' was an important factor in relationship potential.
- Around 1 in 10 of respondents said they would ask someone out based on show compatibility alone.
- A little over half of those surveyed felt that sharing a Netflix account is a “big step toward a 'serious' relationship”, and they'd wait until they're dating someone exclusively to do so. 17% even advocate waiting for engagement or marriage before sharing an account - that's some serious commitment.
- 58% of those surveyed said they bond with their partner over Netflix.
Those who stream together, stay together.
