When The Beatles became the world's biggest band during the 1960s, little did they know that their music would one day make its way into the vernacular of today's digital generation: emojis.
Former Beatles member Paul McCartney is doing just that with the help of Skype. As of Wednesday, he has been helping the the video chat service develop a series of sounds to accompany a new collection of emojis destined for Valentine's Day messages.
“At first I thought, hmm, strange proposition, is this for me? And then I thought, you know what, why not? Something fun, something nice and new,” McCartney explained in a video on his website.
The short YouTube clip shows the 73-year-old tinkering away in his studio as he creates cool little soundbites to express twenty different emotions. Expect to see some rad guitar hooks and a freakish xylophone as McCartney tries to figure out ways to turn music into emotion.
Speaking of the challenges of this project, McCartney explained that “you suddenly realise you've got to compress a musical interpretation of an emotion into less than five seconds”.
“It was like doing a huge crossword puzzle and coming up with all these solutions. And at the same time it was musical so it was great practice for me in the studio.”
McCartney added that the most challenging sounds to make was for flirting and blushing.
That doesn't mean the music maestro isn't having any fun. Admittedly, he has said that he uses emojis in his own communication and also has an interest in musical experimentation. Kanye West and Rihanna collaboration, anyone?
Next step towards world domination: memes by Paul McCartney.
